Middle and High School CS Teaching Program (Fall 2013 - Present)

The Digital Literacy Project recruits and trains Harvard undergraduates to teach high-quality computer science classes to middle and high school students. DLP partners with public schools in Boston to provide a ten-week long program that introduces students to basic computer science skills and fosters interest in STEM courses. Curriculum is designed to give students the skills they need to develop further interest in computer science and to encourage them to pursue other math and science courses as they enter high school. Data driven instruction and regular assessment of learning objectives are incorporated throughout. The program began in five classrooms in the fall of 2013 and expanded into 11 classrooms the subsequent spring, reaching over 250 students in grades 6 - 9.

Pathfinders Mentorship Program (Fall 2014 - Present)

Pathfinders is a mentoring initiative of The Digital Literacy Project that pairs tech industry professionals (mentors) with groups of middle school students (mentees) who have participated in DLP’s introductory computer science course.

Mission Hill School Pilot Program (2010-2011)

The Mission Hill School XO laptop pilot program was DLP’s first collaboration with the Boston Public School System. The Mission Hill School is a low-income public charter school in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood. The program was designed to help the 4th and 5th grades grow from a 0.06 laptop to student ratio to the one laptop per child ratio that enables ownership of technology.

The program included:

  • After-school sessions
  • Pre- and post-assessment interviews and surveys

Cambridge Friends School (2009-2010)

The Cambridge Friends School XO laptop pilot program was one of the first in the Boston area. The Cambridge Friends School (CFS) is an independent K-8 Quaker school in Cambridge, MA. The goal of the pilot was to authentically integrate the XO into the existing curriculum.

The program included:

  • Teacher training workshops
  • Classroom activities
  • After-school sessions
  • Pre- and post-assessment interviews and surveys

During the 2008-2009 academic year, DLP piloted the XO in the two 6th grade classrooms (28 students). In the fall of 2009, the XOs were moved to the 4th grade (27 students), where they have been a better match for student age and interests. The 4th grade program was expanded to include the 3rd grade in the fall of 2010, totaling 40 students.
